More people than ever are choosing to travel with their pets to vacation spots. More resorts, villas, and hotels are providing pet friendly accommodations and even airlines are making the journey easier. There are several ways for you to make vacationing with your pet easier on you and her.
The first consideration that must be made is why do you want your pet to come with you? Is it for their enjoyment or yours? Many dogs and most cats can become anxious and scared when thrust into a new environment. Pets like routine- routine sounds, locations, smells, and foods. If you have never travelled with your pets, take them on short trips in the car to assess how they will react before you pack them onto an airplane and fly them halfway around the world.
If your pets get anxious while traveling, there are sedatives that your veterinarian can prescribe to calm them, but, as with all medications, there are always medical risks involved. You may wish to leave such a pet at home in the care of a pet sitter or board them at a local kennel. Elderly pets are also at risk of developing medical issues from the stress of travel and should be left in the care of others.
If your pets are not bothered by travel and you wish to bring them along, make sure to make arrangements for every step of the journey. The very first step in travelling to a foreign country with animals is to brush up on the animal importation laws of the country. Some countries do not allow animals to enter without a quarantine period. For example, Britain requires animals to remain in segregated quarantine for six months before entering the country. Quarantine restrictions do not make vacationing with animals practical. Most countries require at least a veterinary certificate stating that the animal is in good health, so prepare to visit the veterinarian a week or two prior to your trip.
If flying, check with the airlines to understand the rules for animal travel. You will need to provide an approved animal carrier and enough food and water for the journey. If you are renting a car, make sure that the car company allows animals in their vehicles.
Your hotel or vacation property may have specific rules about renting with animals. Make sure to find out the rules ahead of time so that you don’t find yourself without a place for your animals at the last minute. It is never a good idea to try to sneak in your pets without the manager’s knowledge as being caught may result in your eviction from the property.
Once you know all the rules and still wish to bring your pet along, make him or her as comfortable as possible. Bring along the regular food and water dishes as well as favorite toys. Animals remember the familiar just like humans, and the more familiar objects your pet is surrounded with, the calmer and happier he or she will be.
Vacationing with your pet can pose challenges, but understanding the rules will make it a more enjoyable experience for both you and your pet.
